The Bird Rock Community Council issued a warning Friday after two dogs were poisoned, one of them fatally, by plants growing on the west side of the bike path near Via Del Norte.

“Keep your dogs away from these plants,” the council said. “They are extremely toxic.”

Cases of whooping cough continue to rise in San Diego County and across the state, with more cases reported this week in an epidemic that is the worst California has seen in 52 years.

Eleven new cases were reported in the county this week, bringing the total so far this year to 468 cases, county Health and Human Services Agency officials said. Most of the new cases were in North County.

Two small earthquakes shook the desert of eastern San Diego County Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
A magnitude-3.7 temblor hit at 7:34 a.m. and was centered eight miles north northwest of Ocotillo.
